Columbia, South Carolina—A short story titled “Assignment: Sheepshead Bay” by mystery writer Paul A. Barra of Columbia has been chosen by The Mystery Writers of America (MWA) for inclusion in When a Stranger Comes to Town, an MWA anthology scheduled for publication by Harper Collins in April 2021. He is a member of the MWA’s Southeast chapter.
MWA is described as the premier organization for mystery and crime writers, professionals allied to the crime-writing field, aspiring crime writers, and folks who just love to read crime fiction.
Barra, a former chemistry teacher and naval officer—he earned the Bronze Star with Combat V and Combat Action ribbon—is the author of three thrillers, A Death in the Hills, Astoria Nights and Westfarrow Island, as well as a children’s book and a historical novel about the bishop of Charleston during the Civil War.
The short story by Barra was one of ten chosen in a blind-judged nationwide contest, and will appear with invited works by a Who’s Who of the mystery world: Alafair Burke, Michael Connelly, S.A. Cosby, Steve Hamilton, Joe Hill, Joe R. Lansdale, Lori Roy, Scott Smith, Lisa Unger and the anthology’s guest editor Michael Koryta.
Paul A. Barra called this contest selection “a prestigious win” and talked about the origin of the winning story: “I adapted it from a novel manuscript I’m finishing now, so it is doubly heartening to be included in the next MWA anthology.”
